The Ultimate Newborn Photo Session

2016 is approaching quickly, I will be taking some time off for the Holidays to refresh my mind and body so I can hit the ground running when I reopen for business in January – giving my customers the Ultimate Newborn Photo Session.  I always like to come up with new and creative ideas.  Always on the hunt  for new props that will delight my littlest customers and make their images special.  I will even break out my sewing machine and make some new baby clothes for newborn and 4 month sessions.

So today, I blog a few of my favorite images from newborn sessions shot in the last quarter. These images have really melted my heart.

I hope you will let all your expecting friends know about Brenda Horan Photography   Sessions are typically done between 7-14 days old.  Booking during your pregnancy is wise, as most of the best, experienced photographers have their schedules planned out well in advance.   I also offer gift certificates – so if you are going to a baby shower – give them a gift they will think is PRICELESS!!!

Let’s start off with my favorite pose for newborns -where the baby face is  just so pretty and the hands and toes are also displayed so nicely.  All these outfits are in my prop closet for clients to choose from.  Hats, headbands, and teddy bears are all added to compliment, not overpower, the baby.Ultimate Newborn Photo

Beautiful Props Available at Brenda Horan Photography

Having a lot of beautiful props at Brenda Horan Photography is something I am known for.  Making it easy on the customer, not having to go out and shop is a perk.  Choosing between the variety of props is another thing…. not so easy.

I just got in some great new items that I haven’t even been able to use yet!  I’m super excited to have these items from the fabulous Mia Joy Studio Website Here  – her items sell out so fast that they are difficult to get!   The  details are just to die for!!!

SIX new Mia Joy Newborn Outfits!!!
SIX new Mia Joy Newborn Outfits!!!

There’s also a new vendor ~  Inspired By Adele Website Here  ~ whom  I’ve been getting items from.  I just adore working with her, she is producing great quality items for newborns and babies of other ages.   I like to have a variety of items on hand for babies at the 4 month sessions because they need to still look like a baby – and those times of items are sometimes hard to find.   She up-cycles things –  so I sent her a few of my shirts and sweaters….. the little chevron outfit is from one of my sweaters and I can’t wait to use it in a little hippy inspired set!

Super cute newborn and 4 month outfits.

I love a good hat – I wear them often.  Babies in hats just make my heart melt.  When I found April’s Yarnables website here I felt like I met a long lost relative.  Her work ethic is incredible.  She is incredibly kind as well.  I hope to meet her one day because I think we would have a lot of fun.

Her hats are made from felt and they are super soft, fit beautifully and really made with quality.   She knits her hats first then felts them down to size – there is such a lot of work that goes into each creation.  And each hat comes with a detachable floral tie (not shown) making them easy to mix and match.

A photo of one in use…. isn’t he cute?

Now, when it comes to knitting, Nancy, owner of Ewe Baby, is my first choice!  Website Here .  Her work is perfection and she loves creating!

My favorite things are her hats with matching wraps, and her fun little hats.

She makes so many of my favorite items, including this little sailor hat (my fav) and sweet little outfits for newborns. IMG_0091

Newborn to One at Brenda Horan Photography

This week, another one of my baby clients graduated from the BabyCAKES program – it’s bittersweet to celebrate their smash cake session because I’m just getting to know their little personality quirks.   Going from newborn baby to a walking one year old is captured and sealed in time with images you will cherish forever.  So will your child as they grow up.

Let’s start at the beginning – the newborn session:

Adding soft, delicate knitted items and a personal touch of their baby bracelet make this image just precious.  Tiny fingers and tiny toes, with the beautiful, sleeping face and carefully tied bow.  To me this is perfection.

The profile of a chubby cheek baby is always my favorite.  Add the classic bow, and vintage linens and you have another beautiful image.

Moving on to the next session at 4 months old, we want the baby to be able to make eye contact.  Sometimes we get lucky with a little spit bubble.  What I love most is their eyes are just full of wonder and delight, and their skin is pure milk and honey.

Being able to grab their little piggy toes is another great shot at this age.  They giggle and think funny noises are funny.  Vintage linens make this classic outfit just adorable.BHP_7702

Next is the 8 month session – where babies are steady sitters, and  crawling about.

Babies at this age love to stand and show off they are SO BIG so we love outfits that show off their baby chub and pair it with a vintage chair to hold on to.

Finally, the 12 month session – where we take multiple outfits and then finish with a smash cake at the end.  Babies love musical instruments, the love their independence, and they love little things to hold on to and explore.  And what girl doesn’t love jewelry?  So when I saw this vintage jewelry box, I knew it would be a great prop for little girls.  It’s been a hit so far.

So when the mom writes me this:

Brenda!!!! You’ve outdone yourself!! These are great!
                                                             Thank you!!?
I feel that sense of pride that I’ve added something positive to this families lives by capturing their precious baby as she grew and it makes me all warm and gooey inside.  It’s a privilege I do not take lightly.

I have put my heart and soul into this…

If you build it, they will come…..  a few years ago I shopped for weeks buying antiques, worked with friends to create the perfect environment and then Santa enchanted every child that showed up for these special sessions in my studio.  I have put my heart and soul into this photo session – it’s something I believe every parent or grandparent should do with their kids.  You won’t  regret the money spent – and the Heirloom Storybook you receive will be cherished for your lifetime and theirs.

In fact, this is a great gift idea for grandparents to give their grandchildren instead of toys… it will make a long lasting impact, even when you are gone.

Blogged here is a typical Santa Workshop Session – a fabulous time to interact with Santa that your child will never forget.  We build a story book around these images (written by the talented Jessica Swift Rice) that becomes a family heirloom and worth every penny.  Mothers cry when they see the story come to life with images of their children!    I hope you will enjoy!

Pop telling the children about his adventure when he was a little boy.

Now it’s time for their dreams to come true.  They wake up in Santa’s workshop – can it be true?  The joy on a childs face when they meet Santa is priceless.

Playing with toys in the workshop is something they will never forget.

Building a toy for another child is how Santa teaches them the importance of giving of themselves for one another.

Having Santa read your Dear Santa letter while your sister types her own Dear Santa…. just precious.

Sharing Cookies and milk with Santa is the BEST THING ever!

Then Santa explaines that in order for him to deliver gifts to all the children around the world, he must use Christmas Magic to stop time.

The story ends with the kids back in their bed,  fast asleep, and Santa tucking a little something in their stockings.

What 2 Wear – Family Photo Session

The first thing I do when I’m building my family’s wardrobe for our yearly photo session is decide where I’m going to hang the portrait.  I want to be able to enjoy these images so I always hang my family portrait.  Once I  choose the location, I look around the room and take in all  the colors of my furnishings.  My house has a lot of aqua, grey and peacock blue.  So last year, this was our family image.

Brenda's Family
Brenda’s Family

So, my advice to my clients is to look around their home for color inspiration.  You wouldn’t want to wear a bunch of orange when you have green and burgundy in your home.  It would just clash.  The colors of your room will dictate what is going to look the best in your portrait.   Keep in mind that neutrals like cream and gray can match pretty much anything, and there are varying shades of grey so everyone isn’t in all charcoal – making the photo a big blob.

Different hues of denim can also be helpful, but I would suggest staying clear o really pale shades of denim, go for darker hues.  It’s more timeless.

Where to start?   I love pattern, but not  everyone should be wearing a pattern.  Little girls can easily wear a print, and mom can then start to coordinate everyones outfits around that.  Checks are my favorite on boys.  Men can stick to basics but layer for interest.  Stick to a color palette of three colors and you should be safe.

Tips to Remember:

Keep the location and season in mind.

Pay attention to things like shoes, hair and nails.

Accessorize with jewelry, hats, scarves and vests.

Bring hair brush and hair spray if it’s a windy day.

Look at these suggestions to get inspiration.

Lots of stores, like Gap have clothing for the family and stick to the similar color hues in all their departments.  It’s pretty easy to pull looks together once you know what your color palette is.   Adding accessories you already have will make it more personal.

If you are considering a family session with me, I am happy to help you pull your looks together.  I have an array of things I can bring to stylized sessions that will add a bit of interest.  I just need to know what you will be wearing!

New Backdrop Roller System Built!

Do you have a lot of backdrops?  I do, over 100 of them.  I love  Lemondrop Shop for my drops –  their poly paper is my favorite and their drops come in 5′ wide by 6, 7 or 8′ high.  Perfect for my Backdrop Rolling System by Studio Tools.   (More on them in just a minute).

Storing all these backdrops is easy thanks to these handy carts (which have wheels).  Each cart holds 21 rolled up backdrops.  I keep my drops taped to PVC pipe to keep them free from wrinkle free, easy to organize and ready to go.

Get your cart here:  Cart on Wheels

So, my handy husband has built me three backdrop systems – The first one I loved, then I realized I needed a platform to raise the baby/subjects up so I don’t have to kneel down.  He then built a platform that was 12 inches high and covered with wood flooring which was also on wheels, so I could move it around.  This system was made of steel and required welding, which made it hard for many people to build…… so we came up with a new system made of wood, that most handy husbands can easily build if they follow Studio Tools instructions.

Watch Video of it being used here:  Video on You Tube    (yes, my dog Marty follows me around all the time).

The latest version is awesome, has a FOLD UP platform, is super sturdy and I use it every day I shoot.  It eliminates a lot of wasted time because I can load up to 3 drops up in a matter of minutes and begin my sessions.

folded up back side view ^

The platform is perfect for Lemondrop Shop’s floor drops, and we store our floor drops under the platform for easy access.  Just roll your desired drop down, clamp it to a baseboard (here we use one from Organic Bloom Frame Company.

I always say, other than my camera and lighting, this in the most important piece of equipment I have.  To order your instructions click on this link to Studio Tools etsy shop – it’s only $35 and you get an immediate download.  Included in the instructions is where to purchase items needed.

Costs on materials were under $300 which included the laminate wood flooring.

I’d love to see photos of your system in use.  email me at

Turning One is a BIG Deal at Brenda Horan’s Studio

Turning one year old is a big deal – and nothing makes me happier than a baby who loves cake!

Let’s take my first set up with this baby – when he was a newborn he fit nice and snug on this little bed – now look how big he is!

Lately I am very into little sailor outfits – his had whales and I just new I wanted to put him in my S. S. Jack!

Welcome Aboard mate!

So now that he’s big, he had to try out my old Tricycle…. his older brother probably has one so this little fellow knew it was supposed to GO!

He’s having a baseball party, so we wanted to play a little ball with him.  Just look at those CHEEKS!

Happy little guy – I just xoxox him.

I want to be your baby photographer!  It’s so much fun to develop a little relationship with these babies, and create memorable images for the parents.   Once the baby grows up I know they will enjoy looking at their baby photos – my kids love doing that and they are 17 and 22!

Sometimes the first baby gets thousands of photos taken of them, but the next kid and the next not so much.  CHANGE that.  Make time to capture their sweetness.  They change so very fast.

Everything you need to know is on this link – Brenda’s baby information – check it out.  Tell someone you know who is expecting to check it out too.

I have a great referral program!

After being in business since 1999, I have established myself as the baby whisperer and I love doing silly things to make your baby smile, frown, give funny expressions, all while I’m capturing them be themselves.  Give me a call.

Newborn Photography makes me Happy

When you specialize in Newborn Photography like I do, you learn that the baby is in control.   Yes, I have little tricks in my arsenal from the past 16+ years in business, but sometimes those tricks just don’t work, and having patience is the essential key to making it work.  This week I had one baby that was fussy and one that slept like a rock.  The difference really is in the experience level and patience of the photographer and how I can calm the mom down by reassuring her each baby session is different and for her not to worry, that I’m going to capture sweet images of her little babe.

With all newborn session,  I’m asking the mom what colors are in the baby’s nursery, then mom will pick out her favorite items from  everything I’ve selected for the session.   I’m really in love with my new, tiny teddy bears.  I have them in a range of colors and I just love the  texture they add to these sweet images.

I see a trend going on lately, with more wrapped and dressed little babies, so I have a dozen or more little baby outfits for both boys and girls for mom’s to pick from, that add just the right amount of coverage to a baby so they aren’t all naked in every image.  These outfits are selected for softness and fit and work perfect for newborn sessions.  Easy on and easy off so the baby is less likely to wake up during changes.

Choosing a newborn  photographer should not be based on price, it should be based on the style and experience of the photographer.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture your baby as the sweet an innocent babe that they are.   Believe me when I say that they grow very fast, and before you know it they will be crawling and laughing and before you know it going off to college!

Sessions are typically done between 7-14 days old.  Booking during your pregnancy is wise, as most of the best, experienced photographers have their schedules planned out well in advance.

I love helping customers plan our their nursery design by utilizing wall design programs I have on my computer, that will show them exactly how their wall layout will look in their room.  It’s important to me that the money they spend with me is money well spent and enjoyed for years to come.

Please contact me at for more details.

Tulsa’s favorite child photographer

When it comes to choosing between all the child photographers, Brenda Horan knows what it takes.  Working with children is something she has worked on for over 16 years, photographing hundreds and hundreds of children in around the Tulsa area.

Creating a fun, colorful and bohemian styled shoot for two sisters has been in the works for some time.  The weather did not cooperate on the session date, so we moved it into the studio.  What’s missing is the swing, the tent and a lot of fun vintage props…. but I still love these images.    Floral headbands by APP Design

Sisters – these are twins –  there’s no greater bond.

Brenda Horan Photography

Shopping for little props is so much fun – these vintage doll clothes makes a perfect banner.  The dresses are from and are just so beautiful.

So here’s twin #1 – she’s the older one, so she got to pick her bohemian burlap style headband from Stirlings Flowers first….  Stirling makes such beautiful things for me – these were specially made and I’m just loving the boho feel.

This is twin #2…. equally as beautiful and photogenic.  She reminds me of a  young Brooke Shields.   Both girls have amazing personalities, are well behaved and can tilt their heads to the perfect angles.  Dad might need to load up on ammo now.

So, even tho I couldn’t set up my boho camp with all my vintage lanterns, linens, ironing board,  tent and quilts, it was still fun, and I really love the simplicity of the photos.  After all, it’s about the faces I photograph and these are truly beautiful faces.

If you are looking for a photographer and live in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, please contact me.  I specialize in newborn, family, child and boudoir photography.  My staff and I strive to make each experience a memorable, stress free session, with excellent customer service, timely orders and we love your referrals.

Organic Bloom Baby #3 Arrives

My friends, Jason and Andrea, owners of the Organic Bloom Frame company, just had Baby Bloom #3 – it’s their third baby in three years.  And lucky me, I got to photograph all three as newborns.

Here’s Poppy….. she looks a lot like Jason’s mother if you ask me.  Same shape face.  She was a little doll baby for our photo session.

I’ll start by posting my favorite images from her session – this is one of my favorite colors.  The sweet fluff is from Oh So Fleeting and this color is to die for….  It goes beautifully with the little bubble (from one of my sweaters – repurposed)  and headband from Stirlings Flowers.  The great thing about Stirling is that she custom makes items so if you love quality headbands, message her.

The next photo is one I call Oatmeal Fluff –  more of this super soft fluffy  stuff, an adorable as can be romper with coordinating headband….. isn’t she just SQUEEZABLE!?

This next prop image features a sweet bed from Turtle Pond Works (super sturdy and high quality) and some vintage finds I probably got with Andrea on one of our many antique shopping trips.   The little baby pants are from Post Box.

The next image features a sweet, delicate headband from Stirling – just precious with this multi colored wrap from  Nicole at Persnicketys Knits – she is wonderful at what she does.

Another delicate wrap from Persnickety’s, with a darling little headband.  Simple and sweet.BHP_0260

Poppy looks great in color – this purple suits her beautifully.  She’s like her sister Ellie – likes to be wrapped up tight.

Lastly, another pop of color – one of my favorite colors – deep aqua.  This hat was made by Nancy who owns

Ewe Baby – another fabulous knitter who I get the majority of my knitted goods from.  She makes quality and loves to

work on new designs with me.

There are more images of little Poppy – but these were my favorites.  I hope you enjoyed them.

Please feel free to leave a comment – we love reading them.

If you are expecting or know someone who is –  I would love to take their maternity images as well as newborn images.
