Newborn Photographer Brenda Horan’s latest newborn – Max

Max really lived up to his uber cool name.  He’s a 2 week old that weighed in at 6 pounds and  has perfect features.  I really loved all the photos from his session, but these were my very favorite ones.

Let’s start with this image featuring one of my newest hats from Ewe Baby    Nancy knits such cute things and is really easy to work with.  We collaborate on so many things and it’s fun to design something that can be used two ways…. this can be tied under chin for a bonnet look, or behind the neck for a beanie look.  GENIUS!

Backdrop and floor drop from Lemondrop Shop.   where I get all of my backdrops.

Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan-Max-1This next image shows the same hat as a beanie…. and this little bear came from my trip to NYC’s Eloise store in the Plaza.  That’s another blog all in itself!)

Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan -Max-5

This little felt bear is also from Ewe Baby, Hat from Persnickety’s Knits who also knits beautiful, quality pieces  What I love about this image is his back peach fuzz…. and how his bottom lip curls inward.  These are little details that will finish quickly so I’m happy I captured them for his momma.

This variation of the “frog pose” just makes me happy because every boy loves baseball and he’s just so sweet here with that pout.

Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan -Max-3

Traditional frog pose zoomed in tight to see all the little details of his face and all the wrinkles in his fingers and hands.

This image will be hanging in my office – it’s just everything I hoped to capture when I ordered this jersey from  the Knitting Bitty and had my friend April make me this vintage football to just complete the look I was going for.

And I should add that this knit backdrop I got at Mood Fabrics when I traveled to NYC last month – it’s a cashmere blend and I am in love with the brown/grey color.
Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan -Max-6

This last image I love because it’s just beautifully lit, his little profile against his time hand, and the wispy bonnet ties laying across his back.  Sigh…..  Max can you come back every week?

If you are expecting, or know someone who is, please share this blog with them.  I have so many new items coming into the studio on a regular basis, and love my job.

Tulsa Baby Photographer loves chubby babies!

Oh My Goodness – you just can’t stop smiling when you look at this sweet, chubby baby.

Meet Emma Kate.  She is a 4 month old over achiever who not only gave me perfection during the session, but she can sit really, really well.  I am hoping that when she comes back for her 8 month photos, she isn’t already walking.  SLOW DOWN Emma Kate, you will be a teenager soon enough.

So, I’m starting out the blog with a image that just makes me super happy.

All backdrops on this blog post are from Lemondrop Shop

Headband by Maya’s Curls.  Check her out on Facebook.

Next up is Emma Kate wearing a darling romper by Matilda Jane

paired with a headband from The Pink Elephant Boutique

Capturing a little smile sure makes everyone in the studio sigh…..

Another fabulous headband by The Pink Elephant Bowtique.  One of my favorite headband vendors.  All her items sit well on the head, which is actually important.BHP_0269

I love my little baby beds from Turtle Pond Works – well made and super sturdy.

Headband by The Pink Elephant Bowtique.

BHP_0296This is another one of those AWESOME shots that when I download on my computer I give a little leap of joy….. Look at her beautiful complexion, her sweet smile,  her perfect hair bow from Stirling’s Flowers (check her out on Facebook).  Again, this bow sits perfectly on the head and is made from leather.

another cute little nudie – which I just can’t get enough of.BHP_0328

Lastly, a photo of her in front of one of my newest big props – wearing a headband from Nancy at Ewe Baby   We did this set up especially for her grandma Denise.  xoxoBHP_0348I hope you enjoyed these little 4 month old baby photos as much as I did writing and posting about them.  I love babies and kids of all ages – and would love to be your photographer.  Please call me at 918-704-4399.

Tulsa Baby Photographer

Brenda Horan

Brenda Horan loves babies… it shows in her work.

Yes, I love babies.  I had two of my own who are now 22 and 17,  so having a “job” where I get to play and entertain babies for a living is so much fun.  Besides, who doesn’t love dressing up a baby in a cute outfit?

Today I wanted to write about my BabyCAKES program.  This is what I consider the BEST DEAL IN TULSA for having your baby photographed by a photographer with 16 years of experience, fantastic equipment, colorful backdrops and a big variety of props suited for little kids.  I even have a wardrobe closet in case you need a cute, little outfit for your baby or child up to abut 7 years old.

The BabyCAKES program is $475 and includes the newborn session, as well as 4, 8 and 12 month old sessions PLUS at the end of the year you receive a beautiful album compiled of your favorite images from each session.  It’s a value of over $1118 if purchased individually.

Here is little Camilla, whom I photographed all year – we just celebrated her birthday with a Smash Cake Session…. she’s a living doll.  Curly black hair and blue eyes and a smile that melts you!  These are just a few of my very favorite images from each of her sessions.

BlogBoardBHPCamillaSee how much she changed during the first year?  Its just amazing to me.

If you are expecting or know someone who is, please call me!  I would love to capture your baby in photos for you to remember how sweet and innocent they are with photos you will cherish.

2014 Santa Workshop Session Review

Have you ever dreamed of a Santa experience that didn’t involve waiting in long lines, crying kids, impatient dads, only to get up to Santa and find him not Jolly at all?  Well I have.  I dreaded the yearly trek to the mall with my kids.  Then I hated the photos!

Fast forward to what I like to create each Christmas for my customers – a happy  experience.  Three years ago I started doing Limited Edition Santa Workshop sessions.  I shopped for tools, a workbench, a vintage typewriter, vintage toys…. all keeping in mind what I wanted to build – a magical set for Santa to interact with children for about an hour while I captured the precious faces looking at Santa in awe!  Plus who doesn’t love sharing a little milk-n-cookies with Santa?

This year, I ordered new wood backdrops from my favorite company Lemondrop stop

And I love the lodge feel of the set now.

The session follows a storyline written by my friend Jessica Rice and tweaked by me to fit each family album I create.  It’s a beautiful story and the album becomes a cherished keepsake.

We start building the set in early October and sessions begin late October.  Typically I run a limited number of sessions so if you are considering this for 2015 – you should contact me now to get on my waiting list.  Once I open session dates and times I give my current client base first chance at the dates, and anything still open I post on Facebook.

I hope all of you have a wonderful, safe Holiday.  We want to thank all of our 2014 customers for making this a great year and for allowing us to capture your memories.  I can speak for myself and Vanessa, it is a privilage to serve you and we look forward to seeing all of you again in 2015.

Be blessed.

Designing your portrait layout is easy…

A lot of thought and preparation goes into each and every session I shoot at Brenda Horan Photography.  When it comes to displaying your images, I can help you come up with something that will look great with your home decor.

For a bedroom, I like three 16×20 images side by side for a nice balanced look.

For a Chasie Lounge with a clean modern feel, I love the look of a clean ledge with a simple piece of art (in this case I show a curvy vase in a great color) next to a 20×30 canvas.

For a living space – above the couch it’s a nice option to use a grouping, with a 30×40 in the center, flanked by four 20×20 images. Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan-Couch

Above the baby’s changing table, how sweet is it to have a grouping of newborn images to remind you of how small they once were.

Above a dresser, we love another grouping.  We always tell our customers to keep the colors of the room in mind when selecting their color pallet for outfits – this works beautifully together.

A modern couch with a great family collage above it  always looks beautiful.Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan-Living

Your baby’s nursery will always make you smile as you walk into it when you have  your favorite newborn images above the crib – even at 3am!  Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan-nursery

Or  you could choose to collage photos from different sessions during the year of BabyCAKES sessions and frame them similarly to keep it cohesive.

Using the colors in your room/furintiure to keep it all cohesive is important.  You wouldn’t want a neon orange outfit on a little girl and hang that in a room with burgundy walls and formal furniture.  Take everything you love into consideration.  I happen to love the color aqua – so I borrowed this classic car as a prop for my own wedding photos and I wore a aqua necklace (my something blue).  It works well in my house and in this display.

Stairs are typically the place where you have a lot of wall space, but don’t quite know what to do with it.  A black and white image collection works beautifully here because we don’t always have coordinating colors and want to display our very favorite images of our kids from year to year.  Keeping the line of images moving upward really is appealing visually.

If you need help selecting  your wardrobe for a session, I  send you my What2Wear guide.  This helps you to pull together cohesive looks without matching.

If you have any questions, or would like to book a family session, please contact me at

Brenda Horan’s new studio

A few months ago I decided to close down my big 4000 sq. foot studio and simplify my life.  Turning 50 does that to you.  When my husband and I found this house, we knew it would be a perfect studio atmosphere, I mean, we back up to a little lake and the River and have a to die for view!!!  The preserve right behind my house is a private area for residents with a 1/2 mile jogging trail – so many perfect photo opportunities right outside my door! Yeah for me! river

So, I knew that I wanted most of the upstairs of this home to be dedicated studio space – the game room has wood floors and is spacious enough for our main shooting space, with a great big window that let’s in beautiful light.

IMG_7380 IMG_7387My husband attached 6″ velcro strips to the walls at the 8 foot mark to hang our double and triple wide drops so we can create sets (like our Santa set).  He also built me this platform and the backdrop roller system (directions to build your own on my etsy site:

This entire system really works fantastic for me -it’s easy to install backdrops and quick to change out our little sets when we are photographing babies or children.  Plus having it elevated means I can sit, not kneel.  Having it on wheels makes it easy to move about the studio.

We love our Organic Bloom frame of color!  Everyone loves the quality and colors of the original maker of the curvy frames.

IMG_7395When we moved out of the retail space, I took my sign down and my husband was nice enough to  take it apart so that I could hang the facade on my walls with out the bulky electrical box.  Repurposed dresser works great as a changing station and a stash for our knitted hats and wraps.

The next images are our props and wardrobe – when we moved out of the big space into a smaller space, we sold off about 1/2 of the stuff we had… keeping our very favorite items.

The attic (not shown) is right outside this door to the right – it holds our props that don’t have to be climate controlled, such as chairs, crates, and suitcases.

This walk in closet holds things we use a lot and our wardrobe.

We love having a selection of cute dresses and bloomers for girls – Matilda Jane if one of our favorites.

We also like having a nice little selection of things for boys .

We have so many pretty things for girls – that it’s hard for clients to choose.

These flet hats are crafted by Aprils Yarnables – super cute and well made!

We have a bedroom that is our boudoir space – it’s got repurposed, repainted furniture and a vintage vibe.  Just like our last studio, we can mix and match our furniture, backdrops and bedding to create a one of a kind space.  Right now it’s plain vanilla, but we have so many options, I could do a blog on just that alone.

Maybe I will.

Now on to my office and where I give image presentations to clients.   We repurposed and painted my husbands grandparents king size headboard, added glass knobs and viola – a perfect spot to hang my vintage cameras!

Three of my prized possessions – my Florabella Canvas print, my English Crib and my dog, Marty.  He’s chillin like always.

Our Organic Bloom frames are on display – two of my favorite shapes, Ricky and Ellie.

And this dresser (also my husband’s grandparents) is used to hold albums, mini accordians, cards, and all sorts of paper goods.

So moving into a home based studio might make people a little hesitant, but we still offer great service, great images and 48 hour turn around with our images.  We want to be your photographer – if you live in the Tulsa area, please contact me for your newborn, baby, children, high school senior, family or boudoir portraits.

Bella gets Baptized at – Celebrate!

Oh how I’ve waited so many years for my 16 year old daughter, Isabella, to make the decision for herself, to make the public  display of accepting Christ and be water baptized.     Today was the day!

I knew the minute Bella walked up to paster Tome and locked eyes on me (behind the lens) that the emotion of this life  changing event would hit her…. and it did…IMG_4561

The minute her eyebrows knitted together, I was crying along with her…

I am so happy that I volunteer to take baptism photos at LifeChurch

because I was able to capture this raw emotion in my own daughter…. while tears streamed down my face.  BEST. FEELING. EVER!

IMG_4572 IMG_4576 IMG_4578 IMG_4581 IMG_4584

Today we celebrate the amazing love Christ has for all of us.  He gave his life freely for us so that we may be free ourselves.  I am so proud of Bella, and thankful for the over 30 people who came to church today to celebrate this with us.  For her Leadership Teacher, Mr. Davis who brought the entire Metro Leadership Team to be there to support Bella, and for our many friends and family who joined us.

God is VERY good.

Tulsa Photographer Brenda Horan Captures Newborn Twins First Year

Twins – nothing could be cuter!  I just love when a mom calls me expecting twins…. the creative possibilities for me is endless.

In the image above, I ordered this bunk bed and banner to coordinate with this old quilt I cut up to fit these tiny bed mattresses …. Hew & Harry look so peaceful, don’t they.

All backdrops from the BEST backdrop company ever – LemondropStop:

It’s important to me that I capture newborn twins together in a variety of poses (as well as individually) to show their connection.

These sweet little hats were the perfect way to show these babies are different, yet linked from the start.  I hope they grow up to be each others best friend!

This sailor photo  has to be one of my all time favorite images.  I love the hats created by NRB Designs… she did such a great job.

Preparing for a twin newborn session – or any twin session after that, takes a lot of time and consideration. I plan  ahead – trying to coordinate our props with the nursery design.  My many vendors who send me props, knits, etc. work to make all of this come together as I envisioned and it’s a pleasure to work with ladies that create quality, beautiful items for me.

The 1 year old CAKE SMASH – let’s just all say YUM together!  It’s the most fun session we do – what’s better than cake and chubby babies?

Capturing their individual personalities is always important – these guys were just happy as they could be.  Their mom, who looks like a super model, follows the Babywise plan.  For those of you having babies, it’s something she highly recommends.

Working with a client from their maternity photos to their baby’s first year – it’s a very special time for me – the connection we make with our clients is why I do what I do.  People are important to me, relationships are the MOST important thing to me and capturing images that make them smile as they go thru the next decade – well that’s priceless.

Groves Family Newest Addition

Ever since I moved here eight years ago, my dream was to continue building customer relationships that would allow me to capture their family year after year.  I had that in Annapolis, MD. and I had that in Melbourne, FL.  So it was important to me to continue the tradition.   There are so many families we have  had the pleasure serving over the years here in Tulsa and hope to continue to do so.

When my clients Noel and John told me they were expecting their fourth baby – of course I leapt for joy.  Tulsa-Photographer-Brenda-Horan-Baby-9

Here is their beautiful baby girl, who if she takes after her two sisters and brother, will be sweet, shy and beautiful with amazing eyelashes.

Here are some of the newborn photo session images that I just loved.

Noel brought this adorable little butterfly set and I think she looks so sweet!

This aqua (my favorite color) hat is from  NRB Designs – Nancy is a pleasure to work with and makes quality knitted items for me all the time.

Another beautiful NRB Design –  bright colors look amazing on the baby!  This is the softest wrap and  bonnet and I’m in love with the color!

John is raising another princess!

Another NRB design.
